Early withdrawal charge
£1,250
If withdrawn for reasons other than a first home or age 60+
A 25% bonus, with a catch if you change your mind
Worked example: pay in the full £4,000 this tax year and the government adds £1,000, for a £5,000 pot. Withdraw that £5,000 for anything other than a first home, terminal illness, or being 60 or over, and the 25% charge takes £1,250 — leaving you with £3,750, which is less than the £4,000 you paid in.
That asymmetry is the trade-off for the bonus: a LISA rewards patience and penalises an early change of plan.
